    Yeah, what’s a matter with you Brits? I grew up playing chess on Santa Monica Beach, on the boardwalk near the pier. Where Najdorf took on all comers (during the ’66 Piatagorsky Cup), Walter Browne hustled, and a vast assortment of madmen, surfers, retired wrestlers and , yes, even serious chess players, spent long afternoons blaming their blunders on bikinis.

    I might also mention the time way back in 1979 I ended up near 75th and Broadway in Manhattan at one in the morning watching GM Roman Dzindzihashvili giving super-strong IM Norman Weinstein 1 to 5 minute odds at blitz, all the time downing shots and gazing off in the distance .. well, at least as far as the waitress ..
